We have submitted a planning application for a new reading studio in the gardens of a significant historic property in the Cambridge West conservation area adjacent to Clare Hall. The structure nestles below a large historic Beech tree, and has beautiful views across fruit trees and a west facing garden. The structure is crisply detailed using simple materials. A dark metal roof and charred timber exterior shelters a warm oak clad glazed screen around a birch clad interior composed of bookshelves and desk space.

The structure draws reference from Russian and Eastern European 'Dacha's'. These structures are often self built, and elevate the concept of a simple 'hut'; becoming instead 'homes from home' that express the personalities of their occupants. We were inspired by how details such as the eaves and windows are often curiously both self-evident but also baroque in nature.
