Letchworth Glebe

This project involved the sensitive refurbishment and modern reconfiguration of a historic letchworth terrace house, thought to be one of the Letchworth show houses. The spirit of Craftsmanship expressed by Parker and Unwin and other prominent arts and crafts architects was a keystone during design development.

Careful structural works were undertaken internally to create a sequence of semi open plan spaces at ground floor to create glimpses of the garden. Existing fireplaces and quarry tile floors were retained and complimented by a palette of European Oak joinery, new nordic pine flooring and birch veneered plywood linings to the new kitchen and stairs contrasts with a sharply detailed new kitchen.

The second phase of the project involves a new extension which uses a simple language of timber, render and terracotta iwith a new timber bay window overlooking a generous rear garden top-lit by roof lights. The articulated facade relates to the arts and crafts tradition of sheltered projections and emphatic detailing.
