Streatham

Streatham

Involved the substantial retrofit and extension of an eclectic listed building in Streatham South London.

The existing building had a fascinating biography as a former coaching Inn complete with a large well in its basement, a large Georgian dwelling with successive additions over a two century period made in the Victorian, Queen Anne and Art Nouveau styles. The project sought to curate and draw attention to these different eras by removing harmful additions made in the early part of the 21st Century and reconcile these with a new 21st Century layer that touches the building lightly.

The project incorporates sustainable design principles with canopies optimised for solar gain and shading, passivhaus insulation values and a new biodiverse roof.

The new extension was designed around a historic pear tree which informs a new corner garden access.
